Is 'What Happened to Ohio in 2020?’ Really the Right Question?
Isn’t odd that the two presidential elections in the Modern Era in which Ohio voted “wrong” both consisted of elections in which there were credible allegations with evidence of cheating by the Left.
Of late, the Left has published a couple of pieces asking “what happened to Ohio in 2020?” discussing how Ohio went from the most accurate predictor of presidential election winners to “getting it wrong” in 2020 (see Yale's and MIT’s best faux economist Paul Krugman’s drivel here and taxpayer-funded National (Left-Wing) Public Radio here). The pieces struck me as odd, as one “miss” doesn’t make a trend and certainly doesn’t indicate something is “wrong.” Perhaps if Ohio again supports Donald Trump in 2024, but he loses the Electoral Vote election then pundits can start asking that question. Until a trend occurs, however, that question is grossly premature.
Since the founding of the Republican Party in 1860 by Abraham Lincoln, Ohio has voted with the presidential winner in every election except five elections: 1884, 1892, 1944, 1960, and 2020. That puts Ohio’s success rate over 180 years at forty-one out of forty-six presidential elections, or 89 percent. In the 76 years since the 1944 election (i.e., the post-World War II “Modern Era"), Ohio has voted for the winner in seventeen out of nineteen elections, which is a 90% accuracy rate. The two elections when Ohio voted “wrong” were in 1960 and in 2020.
You see where I’m going with this?
In 1960, John Kennedy beat Richard Nixon by an Electoral Vote margin of 303 to 219, with Illinois (27) and Texas (24) making the difference. Kennedy beat Nixon in Vice Presidential candidate Lyndon Johnson’s Texas by 46,000 votes. Kennedy beat Nixon in Chicago Mayor Richard Daley's Illinois by 9,000 votes out of 4.75 million votes cast. There were widespread and credible allegations of cheating in both states by Johnson’s and Daley’s political machines. Had Nixon won both of those states, he would have won the presidency by a 270 to 252 Electoral Vote margin (and Ohio would have been right).
In 2020, Joe Biden beat Trump by 43,000 votes in Arizona, Georgia, and Wisconsin. A thinner margin, mind you, than Trump’s 73,000-vote margin of victory in three states in 2016. Now, I’m not going to beat the dead horse about the 2020 election, as I’ve written about it extensively in these columns (you really should read them all if you haven’t):

The Biden Family’s Deeply Troubling History Compared to the Trump Family Is Far from Normal (March 4, 2024)
The simple and, I believe, irrefutable facts are (1) had the Communist Chinese government not allowed international travel to continue as it shut down domestic travel out of Wuhan thereby causing a pandemic in the West; (2) had the media not hit Trump with 90% biased negative news coverage for four unrelenting years; (3) had the Left’s various hoaxes (Russia, Alfa Bank, etc.) not been covered up and pushed as if true; (4) had Hunter Biden’s laptop not been suppressed; and (5) had massive changes to voting by mail that weren't approved by state legislatures as required not occurred, Trump would have made up that 43,000-vote margin in three states and won the 2020 election REGARDLESS of the voter fraud many believe also occurred.
As I wrote in my column, Trump the Colossus,
No other candidate or president has faced the level of hatred, lies, fraud, turncoats, and attacks that Trump has hit head on and survived…some would even say thrived. Here are just a few of the issues Trump has dealt with:
Russia collusion hoax that started during the 2016 campaign and continued through John Durham’s report that finally revealed how much of a hoax it was;
Alfa Bank hoax;
Abuse of the FISA Court to spy on Trump and his supporters;
The Charlottesville lie;
The “Suckers and losers” lie;
The “swallow bleach” lie;
Structures set-up by Barack Obama, Biden, and their top officials to trap and undermine Trump and his administration from day one of his tenure;
Deep state and administration false leaks;
90% negative media coverage for nine continuous years comprised mostly of stories based on hoaxes without one outlet ever admitting its coverage was false;
Two baseless impeachments;
Media and Deep State collusion to suppress Biden Family corruption;
Pandemic intentionally caused by China to weaken Trump and hurt America;
Radical and improper voting changes during an historic pandemic entirely tilted to help Democrats;
Billions in outside spending by Mark Zuckerberg (Zuck Bucks), George Soros, and others aimed at improperly turning out Democrat voters;
Unprecedented lawfare against him, his family, his political appointees, and others who supported his agenda;
Collusion by social media companies that suppressed positive news about Trump and negative news about Biden;
Massive overprosecution and dissimilar treatment compared to left-wing rioters of largely peaceful Trump supporters who did little more than trespass on January 6, 2021;
Deletion and suppression by congressional Democrats and Liz Cheney of likely exculpatory evidence showing Trump had no role in the January 6 riots;
Changing the law so one person with a flimsy rape claim can sue Trump followed by a left-wing judge withholding evidence from a left-wing jury on the flimsiness of the accuser’s claim, which was funded by a left-wing billionaire; and
Four criminal indictments on 91 counts for actions done by others such as Clinton, Biden, and scores of Democrats who were not prosecuted.
Despite all of these items and more, Trump won in 2016 and nearly won by the Left’s own count in 2020.
The Left and the media don’t want to admit those fairly straightforward items. Instead of asking "what happened to Ohio in 2020?”, perhaps they should have considered what was different about 2020 that resulted in Ohio seemingly going with the candidate who wasn’t declared the winner. The 2020 presidential election was rigged before a vote was cast. Had a truly fair election took place in which Trump as president received the same treatment as Obama received for eight years by the media, Trump would have won no matter how many voter shenanigans the Left engaged in. The fact that he only lost by 43,000-votes in three states and leads Biden in 2024 is testament to Trump’s connection to large swaths of Americans that the Left just doesn’t get.
Isn’t odd that the two presidential elections in the Modern Era in which Ohio voted “wrong” both consisted of elections in which there were credible allegations with evidence of cheating by the Left. The right question to ask is: did Ohio actually get it right in 2020 (and 1960)? Yes. Yes, it likely did.
P.S. See this tweet I put out last week on the latest jobs data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. As you can see, I was right about Ohio still not getting back to the peak jobs record of March 2000 (unfortunately).
