Why Does the Global Left Hate Democracy?
The Global Left believes it has a fundamental right to govern that shouldn’t be deterred by pesky uneducated voters who simply don’t know what is good for them.
I’ll be the first to say that democracy can be ugly. Giving people the power to select their representatives and laws can sometimes result in terrible outcomes. As Sir Winston Churchill famously said after saving the world from one of those terrible outcomes in the form of Nazi Germany:
Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.
On the whole, however, democracies (to include republics) have a fairly strong track record of mostly doing good (raising billions out of poverty) and self-correcting when they’ve erred (slavery). So one has to wonder why the Global Left hates democracy so much. By hate, I mean aggressively doing whatever they can to undermine democratic opponents and thwart the will of the People, or at least a plurality or majority of the people.
The American Left’s opposition to the People’s will largely began during the Progressive Era under President Woodrow Wilson. Wilson believed that the Constitution was an impediment to the enlightened endpoint pushed by progressives. Progressives believed that countries should not be run via the democratic ideas of bicameralism and presentment; rather, progressives believed countries should be run by an elite group of experts who know what is good for the masses. The undesirables of a country should be eliminated based on eugenic principles, which is why Planned Parenthood pushed for abortions of segments of society, including minorities. The tragic result of Wilsonian progressivism and the eugenics movement was Adolph Hitler’s Final Solution to the Jewish problem via the gas chambers, which also targeted undesirables like the elderly, disabled, gays, and gypsies.
Fast forward eighty years and the talk of deplorables by the Left once again darkens our society. Just like the Nazis did in pre-war Germany by blaming Jews for the woes of society and increasingly alienating Jews from normal society, the Left targets MAGA Republicans by recklessly accusing them of Christian nationalism (I’m still unclear as to what this is and to whom it actually applies), white supremacy (despite my travels all across Ohio I still haven’t stumbled on these folks), insurrection (read: people protesting democratic election laws that they believed had NOT been followed), and terrorism (somehow people the Left thinks are morons are capable of planning a sophisticated terrorist plot involving millions of MAGA Republicans without any evidence or indictments to support the claim).
So what does the Left do to "strengthen democracy" in the face of this rising MAGA Republican threat:
Urge the military to ignore the chain of command by placing itself ABOVE the democratically-elected commander-in-chief;
Encourage the deep state intel community to subvert the election by elevating false claims about MAGA Republicans and suppressing true claims about the Left’s leader;
Target the leading political opponent with criminal trials in rigged jurisdictions with the hope to jail that political opponent before the next election;
Embed in the administrative state actions to ensure that, if the MAGA Republican wins the presidential election, his team can’t do what the people elected him to do;
Flood the system with more than ten million illegal immigrants with the intent to help those illegal immigrants illegally vote in the next election;
Count those illegal immigrants in the U.S. Census to ensure their states have more Electoral Votes than their opponent’s states;
Pack the Supreme Court so they can get their way when the democratic process doesn’t work for them;
Add strong left-wing territories as states to give them more U.S. Senators so they’ll always control that chamber; and
Push last minute changes to the voting rules that fail to adhere to the due process requirements in the states so that ballots can be cast without the ability to determine if those ballots are proper.
Keep in mind, the only thing MAGA Republicans are pushing is to require voters to show valid identification to vote. That unequivocally really does strengthen democracy by ensuring that only those citizens with the legal authority to vote do vote.
The attack on political opponents isn’t just happening in America. Across Europe, the Left is doing everything it can to push the political parties favored by strong segments of each country to the fringe, or, in some cases, eliminating those parties from elections. I first wrote about the rise of populism back in 2014 following a fact-finding mission to Europe where I met with leaders in the United Kingdom (UK), France, and the Netherlands. The report that I wrote based on that mission, Special Report—European Disunion—The European Union Parliamentary Elections and Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine: The Beginning of the End of the EU and NATO?, highlighted the growing populist movements in European countries based on the same dissatisfaction felt by Main Street Americans; namely, the elite failed to protect the masses by pushing globalist policies on trade and the environment which resulted in job losses and stagflation for the working and middle classes.
The first win by populist occurred in the UK when voters passed BREXIT, followed shortly thereafter by Donald Trump’s shocking presidential win in the U.S. in 2016. Since then, we’ve seen the rise of the gilets jaunes (Yellow Vests) protests in France over high gas taxes, the stunning plurality win by anti-immigration politician Geert Wilders and his Party for Freedom in the Netherlands, and the growing power of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) in local and regional elections in Germany. The elite response to these movements is to deem these politicians and their parties as extreme right-wing groups in which they erect a cordon sanitaire around them so that they cannot be part of governing coalitions, which only angers the masses even more.
As Joel Kotkin recently pointed out in his excellent column, “The Coming Revolt Against Woke Capitalism":
Virtually every ideology that’s undermining the West has its patrons in these ruling cognitive elites. This includes everything from the purveyors of critical race theory and Black Lives Matter to transgender activists and, perhaps most egregiously, campaigners for the climate jihad. In each case, these elite activists reject the market traditions of liberal capitalism and instead promote a form of social control, often with themselves in charge. The fact that these ideologies are destructive, and could ultimately undermine the status of these very elites, seems to matter little to them. That they also infuriate the middle and working classes doesn’t seem to register, either.
The Global Left believes it has a fundamental right to govern that shouldn’t be deterred by pesky uneducated voters who simply don’t know what is good for them. “Our Democracy” simply must be protected from democracy itself. Don’t you get that?
As people frequently point out, areas filled with MAGA Republicans don’t board up their store fronts before elections to ensure their businesses don’t get raided or destroyed. Those actions happen in cities filled with the Progressive Left’s voters who will riot in 2024 should Trump win the presidential election just as they did in 2016, 2017, and 2020. Those riots destroyed whole sections of towns, cost tens of billions of dollars, and led to over 1,000 police officers being injured and killed. The vast majority of those rioters suffered no consequences for their actions. The single—and I truly mean single—instance over the last seven years in which MAGA Republicans rioted was on January 6, 2021, when they sincerely believed the democratic process was being ignored to stop Trump from having a second term. They didn’t raid or destroy a single business. The wrongly stormed the Capitol and did a few million in damages and hurt fewer than 100 police officers. Every one of those rioters and many non-rioters who wandered up after the riot have been hunted down by the federal government, charged with as many crimes as could be manufactured, prosecuted by partisan hacks in front of hyper partisan judges and juries, and thrown in jail. Many of them have committed suicide and been financially bankrupted due to the federal government’s zealous pursuit of them.
Not surprisingly, increasing numbers of Americans believe our country is headed to another Civil War. As I wrote about previously, this possibility is not as far-fetched as you might think. Rather than a hot civil war, however, I think the endpoint is more likely to be an agreed dissolution in which groups of the states form new countries after deciding blue states no longer wanted to be governed by red states and vice-versa. In Europe, the endpoint may just be what I proposed it would be back in 2014: the end of the European Union and return to the fragmented geopolitical history that has been happening in Europe for over 1,000 years.
P.S. It appears the UK is currently not only rejecting populist parties on the Right, but also electing overt anti-Israel Islamist in local elections. These results may be isolated instances, but parts of the UK have been adding immigrants from the Middle East at a rapid pace resulting in Mohammad being the number one name for boys born in those areas. That isn’t a problem so long as those immigrants uphold democratic values. It will be a problem if they don’t.
