Should We Fear the Mexican Reconquistadors?
The irony of the Mexican reconquistador movement and the violent Left is that their collective actions give Trump breathing space to enact his policies, as support for his MAGA movement grows.
In his 2009 book, The Next 100 Years: A Forecast for the 21st Century, Stratfor Founder and Chairman George Friedman made five key predictions about the 21st century. Top global companies and politicians seek out Friedman’s advice given his status as a top geopolitical and strategic thinker in international affairs. The first prediction focused on Russia invading Ukraine sometime after 2010. That happened in 2014 and again in 2021. Friedman’s fifth prediction centered on increasing military hostility by Mexico against America for control of the American Southwest, which fringe Mexican elements today believe is rightfully Mexico’s territory as part of a reconquistador movement. Friedman places this conflict in the 2070s. To arrive at the next Mexican-American War in the 2070s, Friedman focuses on demographic shifts beginning in the 2020s due to low birthrates by Americans (1.66 as of 2022, so below the 2.1 sustainment level) supplemented by the mass influx of illegal immigrants from Mexico and other Central and South American countries (15-20 million from 2021 to 2024).
Sounds familiar, doesn't it?
Friedman’s prediction feels eerily accurate given the events in Los Angeles over the last week in which rioters were burning American flags and waving Mexican flags. To put an even finer point on the events, the Mexican Senate President Gerardo Fernandez Norona stated on Monday:
We’ll build the wall and pay for it. But we’ll do it according to the 1830 map of Mexico. Mexicans were settled in these territories before the U.S. The Mexicans living there are in what has always been their homeland.
…
Names don’t lie. The most spoken language in Los Angeles is Spanish. The United States government has the right to implement whatever immigration measures it deems appropriate, certainly, but they have no right to violate the dignity of immigrants. They have no right to separate families.
…
Mexicans were settled in these territories before the U.S. The Mexicans living there are in what has always been their homeland.
Fernandez Norona needs a history lesson.
First and foremost, to the victor go the spoils. In this case, the victor was America in the Mexican-American War in which Mexico ceded the American southwest north of the Rio Grande River, receiving $15 million in the process. Imagine the utter disorder globally if geopolitical lines were decided by old claims that ignore losing a war and the vast migration and investments in the ceded territory since losing. It is an absurd, juvenile way to approach foreign policy.
Next, back in the 1800s, “Mexico” wasn't much of a country let alone a governing entity. It had done little to populate the American Southwest. In fact, the Comanche had far more control over Texas and New Mexico in the 1800s than Mexico did. The Comancheria absorbed much of those two states. Vince Conner details these realities in his article, “The Claim That America ‘Stole’ California From Mexico Is An Ignorant Lie,”:
By the early part of the 19th century, however, Spain’s fortunes were changing, the empire was stretched too thin, and after a decade of fighting, Mexico gained its independence in 1821. The new nation included what is today Mexico, as well as California and much of the American Southwest, stretching east to Texas and north to Colorado.
…
The population of California in 1800 was approximately 300,000 — almost all natives — essentially the same as it had been for centuries. By 1848, however, it had dropped to half of that due to disease, which was responsible for 60-80 percent of the decline, and the Spanish working to death or killing the natives.
California, at the time of Mexico’s independence, was sparsely populated, with just 200,000 people, and that number was rapidly shrinking. For perspective, that’s 0.5 percent of today’s 40 million inhabitants. Add to that the fact that Mexico could barely be called a functioning country, as in the 27 years from 1821 to 1848, it had literally 40 heads of government. As would seem obvious, the governments were dysfunctional, had an incredibly large land mass to govern, little tax revenue coming in, and very limited finances with which to field an army to secure it, never mind to carry out the minimum responsibilities of a government.
…
The [Mexican-American] war, like the Texas War for Independence, was short, with hostilities ending in September of 1847. After the war, Mexico ceded California and much of what is today the southwest of the United States, as well as relinquished all claims to Texas. At the same time, the Americans paid Mexico $15 million and assumed $3.5 million of debt owed to Americans. After negotiations of terms, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ending the war was signed in February 1848, and California was admitted to the Union in 1850.
Does Fernandez Norona believe the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo is null and void?
Finally, American immigrants SUPPORT what Donald Trump is doing to secure the border and deport illegal immigrants. Those men and women know from experience that it is THEIR jobs and livelihoods sacrificed by the Left to bring in cheap illegal immigrant workers. According to a recent poll, the swing from Democrats to Republicans in support by American immigrants (i.e., voters born outside the U.S.) totals forty-nine percentage points from 2020 to 2024. Trump’s support from Hispanic Americans has risen to record highs over the last nine years. The Left’s racialist view that Hispanic Americans SHOULD support Hispanic illegal immigration is just race-card stupidity that fails to appreciate the economic impact the latter group has on the former group, as well as the criminal damage done by the latter to the former.
As left-leaning thinker Roy Teixeira wrote in his Substack column The Liberal Patriot, Democrats are just wrong on supporting rioters, especially those waving Mexican flags. As Teixeira noted in “Riot On!":
Sure, President Donald Trump’s approval rating has declined some, and many of the things he has done are very unpopular. But the public still generally approves of Trump’s deportation program for illegal immigrants. Support is overwhelming when the focus is narrowed to those who have committed violent crimes. And the Republican Party is still preferred to the Democrats on crime, policing, and immigration, with particularly wide margins among the working class.
The Democrats risk going back to square one on the key issues undermining their brand. Recall that in the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd and the nationwide movement sparked by it, the climate for police and criminal justice reform was highly favorable. But Democrats, taking their cue from progressive activists, blew it by allowing the party to be associated with toxic movement slogans like “defund the police.” Meanwhile, many Democratic officials declined to prosecute lesser crimes, degrading the quality of life in many cities under Democratic control.
It’s also worth recalling that prior to the election, a Democracy Corps survey asked voters what they would worry about the most if Biden won the election. Topping the list was “the border being wide open to millions of impoverished immigrants, many are criminals and drug dealers who are overwhelming America’s cities.”
But a very close second—just a point behind—was “crime and homelessness being out of control in cities and the violence killing small businesses and the police.” Among black, Hispanic, and Asian voters—as well as among white millennials, moderate Democrats, and political independents—crime and homelessness worries actually topped the list.
Democrats are captured by the Left's pro-violent, by any means necessary progressive voter base. Every week, Democrat politicians try to curry favor with that radical base by engaging in ever-fringy rhetoric and activities. California Senator Alex Padilla’s recent yelling and physically resisting his removal from Secretary Kristi Noem’s press conference is par for the course (but, hey, he got his fundraising clickbait video).
While we have been focused on Los Angeles, I spent some time in downtown Columbus this week and stumbled upon the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) office on Broad Street. For those of you who don’t know, USCIS is NOT the law enforcement entity, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). It has nothing to do with hunting down, capturing, holding, and deporting illegal immigrants; rather, USCIS is the entity in the federal government that administers America’s legal immigration and naturalization processes. That fact didn’t stop some moron from breaking the windows at the USCIS office in protest to ICE’s deportation actions.
I also spent time in the Short North where I popped into a coffee shop for a drink. On the way out, I noticed an “8647" sticker that should have been removed after the James Comey beach shell incident now that everyone knows it is left-wing speak for assassinate Trump. Had I seen the sticker before I bought coffee, I would have taken my business elsewhere. Along with the two failed assassination attempts on Trump and the riots, it begs the question: why does the Left display such violent tendencies? Seriously. Their violence isn't just limited to ICE agents. As they torch parts of cities, they are destroying the businesses of mostly Democrats and turning the rationale minds within the Democrat Party towards the Right, including minorities who they desperately depend on for statewide and national election victories.
The irony of the Mexican reconquistador movement and the violent Left is that their collective actions give Trump breathing space to enact his policies, as support for his MAGA movement grows. With each policy win, Trump builds a record of success that will broaden his support even more.

P.P.S. With Israel’s strikes on Iran yesterday, I thought you’d want to take a look at a piece I wrote back in 2007, History and the Holocaust, after visiting three historical sites in Europe involved in the Holocaust. For too long, the West has allowed the mullahs in Iran to get far too close to obtaining a nuclear weapon. I, for one, am glad Israel decided Iran had gotten close enough, so action to destroy that burgeoning capability needed to be taken. Hopefully, Israel so decimates the leadership and capabilities in Iran that the good people of Iran shake off the yoke of the mullahs once and for all.
P.P.S.S. I edited this newspaper headline to reflect what the Left really believes.
