Does the Left Believe Its Policies Are Good for Americans or Just Good for Trying to Win Elections?

Donald Trump may offend people too easily, but his policies are all aimed at strengthening America at home and abroad.

It is a serious and vital question. I have little doubt that the Left believed its policies would help Americans back when Franklin Roosevelt established Social Security and when Lyndon Johnson pushed the Great Society, which included welfare programs like Medicaid, Medicare, and financial and housing aid to the poor. By the way, if you are wondering why I left out “D” and “B” from their names, I’ve decided it is absurd to include initials when not done for clarity purpose like differentiating between John Adams and John Quincy Adams or George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush. I mean, why do certain presidents get a middle initial for no reason and others don’t? At any rate, after roughly $15 trillion in spending over the last sixty years with only a modest decline in the percentage of Americans in poverty (from 22% in the 1950s to 11.5% today) and no decline in the raw number of Americans in poverty (40 million +/- then and now), I’m not as confident that the Left today believes its Great Society policies helps Americans versus makes them dependent on the Left for what the Romans referred to as “bread and circuses."

I have NO confidence that the Left today believes its broader policies are good for Americans versus good for their efforts to hold onto the power.

Take immigration. Joe Biden and the Left opened America’s borders to let virtually anyone who wanted to come to America in. He and his Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro “Ali” Mayorkas bragged about opening the border and reversing all of Donald Trump’s policies that secured the border on day one. In just three years, over nine million illegal immigrants have come into America. While some of those illegal immigrants came with good intentions, many came to mooch off the system, deal deadly drugs, engage in human trafficking, commit crimes ranging from stealing to murder, and, in some cases, commit acts of terrorism. Our enemies most certainly have sent bad actors to create sleeper cells that can be activated to harm us at a moment’s notice. Our Central and South American neighbors also have emptied out their prisons and mental health asylums by making those people our problem. It seems a week doesn’t go by when another American has been killed by an illegal immigrant, with some having been released back into the community by left-wing federal bureaucrats, prosecutors, and judges.

Even the well-intentioned illegal immigrants coming here to make a better life for themselves are doing harm to Average Joe and Jane America. Given the sheer volume of people, those illegal immigrants are suppressing wages across America and displacing American workers (just ask Tyson Foods which just laid off 1,200 Americans it plans to replace with illegal immigrants who were given work permits by left-wing federal and state actors). Though they are reluctant to admit it, the Left’s endgame behind opening the border is to flood the blue states with illegal immigrants because those states are losing Americans who are fleeing to red states to escape high taxes, weak job growth, and other left-wing policies. That is why the Left so badly wants to make sure the U.S. Census Bureau counts illegal immigrants when it conducts the census so that blue states don’t lose Electoral Votes or U.S. House members. Had the Census not included illegal immigrants in the 2020 count, blue states would have lost approximately six more Electoral Votes and U.S. House members to red states. If illegal immigrants AREN’T counted, it is a certainty that red states will continue to gain both Electoral Votes and U.S. House members, thereby making it easier for Republicans to win the presidency and control the U.S. House.

On Medicaid, the entire purpose behind Obamacare’s expansion of Medicaid to 138% of the poverty rate was to make enrollees dependent on the Left to secure their votes. Studies show that medical care under Medicaid isn’t good and enrollees still overuse emergency rooms, so it couldn’t have been to provide high quality and affordable health care to those in need. Studies also show that Medicaid recipients vote Left far more than they vote Right. Plus, the largest beneficiaries of Medicaid expansion are single, healthy working adults who could have gotten catastrophic health insurance, but opted not to. Obamacare eliminated those policies, thereby forcing Americans to buy health insurance to subsidize less healthy people or become dependent on Medicaid. The fact that 100% of federal Medicaid costs are funded by federal deficit spending that adds to the national debt and drives up the amount of interest on the national debt we pay each year makes the policy all the more absurd.  

What about Biden’s unconstitutional student loan forgiveness program? To date, Biden has “forgiven” over $138 billion in student loans, which really means he has spread the repayment of those loans to the rest of us via debt spending. Biden’s entire reason for violating the Constitution to eliminate the debt of Americans is to get the recipients of his largess to support him politically. After all, if he truly wanted to help Americans with debt, why not help those with debt they didn’t voluntarily assume? Remember, any American with student loan debt voluntarily took on that debt to go to college. Why should that debt be forgiven because their plans didn’t pan out? In contrast, millions of Americans are saddled with medical debt due to truly unforeseen or tragic events that left them holding a bag of debt through no fault of their own. Why not help those Americans by paying off or forgiving their debt? As I said when I was running for governor, a medical crisis shouldn’t become a financial crisis for families. The problem for these folks is, unlike college educated debt holders, they mostly aren’t Biden's primary voters so taking care of their debt may not result in them voting for the Left.

Then there is the Left’s climate change policies. These whack-job ideas range from forcing Americans to buy more environmentally damaging, less reliable, and far more expensive electric vehicles (EV) to killing America’s energy independence and from mandating inefficient and intermittent energy sources to eliminating gas-burning appliances. These policies result in large numbers of job losses in manufacturing and energy and higher costs on everyday goods and activities. The only people who support these ideas are the Left’s base voters they need to win statewide and national elections. For tens of millions of Americans, these policies hurt them economically. Biden is hedging his bet that these policies will drive enough of his base out to vote that losing blue collar workers to Trump is worth the price.

The Left's foreign policy also is aimed at appeasing its base voters at the expense of America's national security. In just three years, Biden has squandered the peace Trump brought America. Russia followed its 2014 invasion of Ukraine when Biden was Vice President with a broader invasion of Ukraine. The defeat of ISIS and stability Trump brought to the Middle East with the Abraham Accords and aggressive boxing in of the mullahs in Iran have been replaced with Iran’s proxies in Yemen, Iraq, Lebanon, and Gaza bombing ships and killing innocent Americans and Israelis, including the 10/7 massacre and the kidnapping and raping of hundreds of innocent women, children, and seniors. Biden’s capitulation to America’s Arab voters in Michigan to the detriment of Israel and American Jews is criminal. He can only get away with it because he knows American Jews are so wedded to vote for the Left that he can risk selling them out to the Arab American Street. Biden’s disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan made America look weak and vulnerable. After stopping during Trump’s presidency, North Korea is actively testing weapons again. China is becoming increasingly aggressive vis-a-vis Taiwan and other allies in Asia. Even in our own backyard, stability is crumbling, with the latest meltdown happening in Haiti. In just three years, Biden has set a new record of embassy evacuations after the eleventh evacuation was ordered in Haiti. 

We all know who gets left holding the empty bag when it comes to bleeding and dying in wars that come when presidents make a mess internationally. It isn’t the Left’s college educated voters or their kids; rather, it is rural and urban Americans who don’t vote or vote against the Left. 

Finally, there is the steady drumbeat of abortion-abortion-abortion. It truly rises to a macabre and morally depraved level to use an issue involving the casual slaughter of innocent life into the third trimester for the sole purpose of inflaming woman so they vote for you. No serious policymaker raises the abortion issue in such a base manner. The fact is 92% of abortions occur before the tenth week, which most people would agree is around the time when the pendulum starts swinging from a woman having the total weight placed on her right to choose to the innocent baby’s right to live, as by that point she is thinking, feeling, dreaming, and in every measurable way living. Thus, we are really spending inordinate amounts of political oxygen fighting over the 8% of abortions that occur after the tenth week. The debate should truly be more measured and focused on when a bright line is drawn at which point abortions are not permitted except for the rare exceptions we agree need to be in place. The Left, however, doesn’t want to draw a line; rather, they want to pretend they aren’t for second and third trimester abortions to not turn off reasonable suburban women while at the same time signaling to urban activist women that abortion should be a free-for-all even after a baby is born alive. Truly gruesome and appalling stuff. One day, we will look back on the abortion era in the same manner we look back at the slavery era.

Now do you see why I am skeptical that the Left believes its policies are good for America versus good for them holding onto political power? On major issue after major issue, the Left’s solutions cause short- and long-term harm to America all so it can attract and inspire a certain segment of voters it needs to win. That is why Biden so cavalierly misnamed Laken Riley who was viciously murdered by one of his violent Census beans to be counted. That is why he cares not that Medicaid serves its enrollees poorly. That is why he averts his eyes from the unforeseen medical debt of Americans going through medical crises. That is why he blithely ignores the reality that most Americans can’t afford and don’t want EVs. That is why he refuses to acknowledge the pleas of a decimated father whose child was killed during the Afghanistan withdrawal. And, that is why he isn’t Catholic in the traditional sense, but is only catholic in the box-checking sense that he spends forty-five minutes per week in a church acting like he accepts the fundamental tenants of Christianity.

You want to know why the Biden Family Corruption scandal matters? It is the other side of the same coin Biden carries in his pocket that focuses on doing what needs to be done to win elections and secure power (and wealth) regardless of the impact on Main Street America. It is a "heads I win, tails you lose” coin in which the “you” is America. Trump may offend people too easily, but his policies are all aimed at strengthening America at home and abroad.

P.S. For those keeping score, the battle against the “Blue 22” who voted with Democrats to put a moderate in as Ohio Speaker of the House didn’t go well on Tuesday. Only four challengers defeated a Blue 22 members, as thirteen were reelected with another five term limited or declining to run. Hopefully, Republican base voters will realize if you want real change, you need to win the Governor’s Office, as nothing will get done otherwise.
