Before you blow a gasket, let me state that I believe men should always take responsibility for their reproductive actions and that communities (versus government) should help single mothers who need it. What I don’t like is that men are becoming nothing more than sperm donors and checkbooks when it comes to how the law treats them. Setting aside the reality that it takes two to tango, if a woman gets pregnant and decides to abort the baby, the father has no say and cannot stop her; similarly, if a woman gets pregnant and decides to keep the baby, the father has no say and has to financially support the child through emancipation. Recently, Republican Ashley Hinson (R-IA) unveiled a new piece of legislation “that would ensure pregnant mothers get financial support from the father even before their child is born.” The Supporting Healthy Pregnancy Act is “an effort by the Republican Party to affirm its pro-family ideology as Democrats continue to accuse the GOP of being anti-choice while also being unwilling to support women who keep their babies.” If passed and signed by President Donald Trump, the financial obligation of men would run from conception to emancipation.
